Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you have overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your service. Renew in these your servants the covenant you have made with them at their Baptism. Send them forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

CONFIRMATION in the Episcopal Church is the rite provided in The Book of Common Prayer for baptized persons who are ready and prepared to make a mature, public affirmation of their faith. By it you say for yourself what others may have said for you at baptism. At St. Francis we prepare ninth-graders for Confirmation through a class taken with our Youth Minister David Hirsch. Confirmation is not required for church membership, but it is a significant, public way to affirm your connection to the church. At confirmation the bishop prays that that the Lord will “empower you for his service and sustain you all the days of your life.”
Members of the church who were baptized as infants may choose to affirm their faith as adults through the rite of confirmation by the bishop.
The class for young people is open to any student in 9th grade or above. The 2009 class, led by David Hirsch and meeting from 1:00 to 3:00 in Glenolden House, began September 27 and met weekly each Sunday through November 1. We have 18 students in this year's confirmation class.

In addition, those who have been confirmed in other denominations by a bishop in the historic succession (Roman Catholic, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, or Eastern Orthodox) may be received into the Episcopal Church by the bishop. RECEPTION into the Episcopal Church is for baptized persons who have made a mature public affirmation of their faith before a bishop in another denomination. They are presented to our bishop, who acknowledges their prior status and receives them into the Episcopal Church with these words: “We recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you into the fellowship of this Communion.”

Those who have been baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church (or any member church in the Anglican Communion) and wish to recommit themselves to the life of faith may choose to reaffirm their baptismal covenant with the bishop. REAFFIRMATION is for Episcopalians who are refreshing or renewing their membership in the church. They are presented to the bishop who prays that “the Holy Spirit, who has begun a good work in you, may direct and uphold you in the service of Christ and his kingdom.”
