Choirs and Music

Fall Term
Autumn never fails to bring with it a sense of new energy for me. Sometimes it is more and sometimes less, I’ll admit. But always some amount of waxing vitality percolates up slowly through the late calmative days of summer.
As we move forward into another program year this autumn at St Francis, I invite your active help: COME TO CHURCH. That is what we are called to do, first and foremost. Activities and fellowship are vital and wonderful parts of our corporate life together in Christ, but it’s our worship from which all else should spring.
• September 11th
8:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist
9:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist (note time, please)
Sunday School classroom orientations follow the 9 o’clock liturgy during which an adult “coffee hour” also is held in St Francis Hall.
• September 18th
8:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist
9:00 a.m. Morning Prayer
11:15 Holy Eucharist
Sunday School and the Adult Forum will be held between the 9 o’clock and 11:15 liturgies as per our normal schedule.

Choir Beginnings
The 2011-2012 program year for our choirs will follow this schedule:
Saint Francis Choir (adults) return to Sunday duties on 11 September for the 9 o’clock liturgy. The first Thursday evening rehearsal is on the 8th at 7:30 pm in the choir room.
Youth Choirs will commence with rehearsal on Tuesday afternoon, 13 September at 5:30 pm, also in the choir room.

New Choir Voices
We are very happy to welcome two new singers into the adult choir as we begin the Fall term. The first, last year’s Head Chorister, is Katherine Kuckelman. She will join as a newly appointed high school Choral Scholar. The other, Madeline Miskie, is a doctoral candidate at University of Maryland and will join us as one of our soprano Section Leaders. Please join me in welcoming these choristers to our parish adult choir.

Shadow Tides
A new choral symphony called Shadow Tides will be premiered by Choralis of Northern Virginia on 11 September at 4:00 p.m. in the National Presbyterian Church. This work was commissioned by Choralis as a 10th anniversary commemoration of 9/11 and features our very own Julie Keim as soprano soloist along with a 100+ member chorus accompanied by organ, strings, and timpani. Tickets are available at the door. For more information, please visit www.choralis.org.

Welcome!
Music is an integral part in the worship life of our Potomac Parish family. Our liturgies and the special Music at Eventide offerings connect us with hundreds of years of praise to God through the beauty and mystery of music. The parish program is a wide-embracing endeavor in the classical Anglican tradition and grounded in the pattern of learning set forth by The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). All choirs participate in liturgies throughout the year and enhance a number of our feast day and evening services in concert with instrumental ensembles.
